  My grandson and I love Feed Me Bubbe and have tuned in since the start. She even e-mailed us!! Whatever the ethnic heritage {mine is Polish} Bubbe reminds us of how important family ties are. You go Girl!!

  Enjoying so much all your cooking lessons. Do you happen to know the Yiddish word for “go slowly” something like gay pavaya? My mother said this to me and she recently passed and I am trying to get the correct spelling. Thanks you! and Happy cooking! You are a sweetheart.

  Doesn’t “shpilkes” actually mean “butterflies”?

  My fave Yiddish Word of the Day “tuchas”, is in a quote from my Bubbe- Grandma Tanya: “kish mir in…”

  Rivke, “go slowly” in Yiddish is “gey pamelekh.”

  Elisse, no, “shpilkes” literally means “pins,” as in clothespins. It’s used in an expression equivalent to the English “on pins and needles,” meaning excited, nervous, etc. The Yiddish word for “butterfly” is either “fleterel” or “zumer-feygele” (lit. “little summer bird”). I don’t believe that the expression “butterflies in the tummy” is used in Yiddish.

  Go slowly in Yiddish is gey pamelech – an expression my mother and my babeh always used.

  and i didn’t know that many yiddish words are similar to german words

  Hello Bubbe,

  Today for the first time I was introduced to your site by PBS. They were doing a show on how technology affects our interactions with people. I am happy to have seen it and just signed up for your newsletter. Wonderful site, looking forward to the recipes and videos. Particularly LOVE your voice and choice of words on speaking Yiddish. I plan to use some of the words when speaking with colleagues I visit who are Jewish at a local nursing home. Thank you for your site. You are terrific!

  I’m not Jewish but have had 3 Jewish husbands (and 2 kids 1/2 Jewish). All of them were non-religious but once in a while we like to delve into the traditional foods etc, and I love Yiddish expressions. Go Bubbe!

  I love the show & the recipes! I recently found out that my great, great grandparents were Ashkenazi Jews, speaking Yiddish in the home. They had 8 kids, one of them didnt follow Judaism; this would be my great grandmother. At any rate, its never to late to convert and celebrate one’s heritage; and although I never got to meet my Bubbe, your show helps me to imagine what it might have been like. Keep up the good work!!

  I jokingly said I was starting a group: People Opposing the Perception of the Extintion of Yiddish Ethnicity (POPEYE). Recently I saw that there was a group here in Miami trying to preserve yiddish. Wow! Love watching your show.

  I’ve been craving the food I ate as a child and found the web site this morning when googling recipes. I must try the Borscht soup!

  I am laughing reading all these Yiddish words, I knew quite a few and had no clue they were Yiddish, just thought they were a weird form of German that Grandma spoke when she was excited. I did not even know I was Jewish until a long lost relative found me recently!

  WOW, too bad I did not know more about the culture as a kid, maybe I would have picked up on the little clues.

  Anyway, love the recipes, will have to try a Brisket next.
